Emergency Assistance for Returnees at Kandahar Transit Center (KTC) and Reception Center (RC)
Project Overview
Since its launch on January 1, 2025, HOPA's humanitarian response in Kandahar has focused on providing essential assistance to vulnerable returnees. The initiative, funded by UN-WFP, supports individuals in Kandahar City (KTC), 5th District, through direct cash distributions and in Takhtapul District (RC lock) by supplying High-Energy Biscuits (HEB). The program aims to alleviate economic hardships and improve food security for returnees facing significant challenges upon their arrival.
Cash Assistance to Returnees
Throughout January, 205 households received direct cash support under the AF01-2490 Returnees partnership agreement. A total of AFN 1,189,000 ($16,606.15 USD) was distributed to help returnee families meet their immediate needs, such as food, shelter, and medical expenses. Each distribution was carefully monitored to ensure that the assistance reached those most in need.
High-Energy Biscuit (HEB) Distribution
In Takhtapul District, 1,342 individuals benefited from the distribution of 0.4026 metric tons of HEB, providing an essential nutritional boost to vulnerable returnees. The biscuits, rich in calories and essential nutrients, are crucial for individuals facing food insecurity. Stock management was carefully maintained, with an initial receipt of 3.2466 metric tons of HEB, ensuring a continuous supply for distribution.
Ongoing Efforts and Impact
The project has played a vital role in supporting newly arrived returnees, helping them transition during difficult times. Regular monitoring and evaluation continue to assess the impact of the assistance, ensuring efficiency in distribution and identifying further needs. HOPA remains committed to strengthening humanitarian efforts in Kandahar and will continue to work closely with UN-WFP to provide sustained support.
