HOPA Enhances Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Infrastructure in PD-9, Kandahar City
Kandahar City, PD-9 – Access to clean water and improved sanitation is fundamental to public health and community well-being. To address these critical needs, HOPA (Humanitarian Organization for the People of Afghanistan) successfully implemented a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) project in PD-9 of Kandahar City. This transformative initiative, funded by the Mrasta Charity Foundation, had a budget of $135,000 and directly benefited 953 households (HHs) by enhancing water accessibility and rehabilitating essential infrastructure.
Project Highlights
✅ School Construction and Rehabilitation:
HOPA undertook the construction and rehabilitation of a school, ensuring that students have a safe and conducive learning environment. Proper sanitation facilities, access to clean drinking water, and structural improvements were integrated into the school to promote better hygiene practices among children and teachers.
✅ Construction of a Water Reservoir with Bore Well and Solar System:
To provide a reliable and sustainable water source for the community, a large-capacity water reservoir was constructed. A bore well, powered by a solar energy system, ensures that clean water is available year-round, reducing dependency on unreliable water sources and mitigating the risks of waterborne diseases.
✅ Installation of Water Taps:
Multiple water taps were strategically installed across the community and the school premises to ensure that families and students have easy access to clean drinking water. This intervention significantly enhances hygiene practices and reduces the burden of fetching water from distant locations.
Impact on the Community
🔹 Improved Public Health: Reliable access to clean water reduces the prevalence of waterborne diseases, benefiting over 953 households in the area.
🔹 Better Learning Environment: Students now have improved sanitation facilities, which contribute to better school attendance and overall well-being.
🔹 Sustainable Water Supply: The solar-powered bore well and water reservoir ensure a consistent and eco-friendly water source for years to come.
🔹 Reduced Burden on Women and Children: Easy access to water saves time and effort, allowing women and children to focus on education and other daily activities.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
HOPA remains committed to implementing long-term solutions that empower Afghan communities. By investing in WASH infrastructure, the organization not only addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also lays the foundation for sustainable development in Kandahar.
This project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community-driven change. With the unwavering support of the Mrasta Charity Foundation, HOPA continues to bring hope, health, and resilience to the people of Afghanistan.
Together, we build a healthier future. Together, we make a difference.
