HOPA and WFP Provide Critical Support to Returnees in Kandahar

Kandahar, Afghanistan – In response to the pressing needs of returnee families, HOPA (Humanitarian Organization for the People of Afghanistan), with the support of the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP), has launched a vital humanitarian assistance project to aid returnees in Kandahar City and Takhtapul District. This initiative, which began on January 1, 2025, is providing financial relief and nutritional support to those who have returned to Afghanistan and are struggling to rebuild their lives.

The project provides 5,800 AFN in cash to returnee households in Kandahar City, empowering them to meet their immediate needs, including food, shelter, and other necessities. At the same time, High-Energy Biscuits (HEB) are distributed to returnees in Takhtapul District (RC), offering a nutrient-dense food source that is essential for sustaining families, particularly during this time of transition and uncertainty.

Easing the Struggles of Returnees

With Afghanistan facing economic instability and limited resources, returnees often experience extreme hardship upon arrival. Many lack access to stable income, food, and proper shelter. This project aims to provide immediate relief by offering financial and nutritional assistance to help families regain stability and restore their dignity.

The cash support empowers beneficiaries by allowing them to prioritize their needs, whether it be food, medical care, or shelter, while the HEB distributions provide a lifesaving source of energy and essential nutrients for vulnerable individuals, particularly children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

HOPA’s Commitment to Returnee Assistance

HOPA remains committed to protecting and supporting vulnerable communities, particularly those who have been displaced or forced to return under difficult circumstances. This project, funded by WFP, reflects HOPA’s dedication to humanitarian response, ensuring that returnees in Kandahar City and Takhtapul District receive essential financial and nutritional aid during their time of greatest need.

As the situation evolves, HOPA will continue working alongside WFP and local partners to expand access to assistance and provide lifesaving support to those rebuilding their lives in Afghanistan.

Together, we restore hope. Together, we stand with returnees.
